What is the role of the Compact Crane Operator

The Compact Crane (Spider Crane) is a mini crane and  ideal for operation across low load bearing floors. They are also ideal mini cranes for setting up where the ground is uneven or moving across difficult terrain. These mini cranes will lift between 2 tonnes & 10 tonnes and is ideal for use in confined areas.

Target Delegates

The 4 day CPCS A66 Compact Crane is ideal for candidates who are required to operate a compact crane with little or no experience. It is also suitable for candidates who are experienced, but who are required to gain the CPCS A66 Compact Crane card.

Pre Course Requirement

Individuals can have little or no experience of working with lifting equipment. Good hand- to eye co-ordination is essential for the compact crane.

However it is essential that you have a good knowledge of Slinger Signaller Signals.
For the CPCS Compact Crane course, you will need The Health Safety & Environment test for Operatives is required or the higher tests of the Specialist Supervisors or the Managers & professionals (MAP)

This is a 45 minute touch screen multiple choice test consisting of 50 questions. This test can be taken at various Person Vue test centres though out the country, you can arrange your own test and locate your nearest test centre by clicking here.

Revision is strongly recommended for the Health & Safety Test; revision books, DVDs and downloads are available from CITB store.

If you are struggling to get a date for the health and safety test and your training course in imminent if you are training at Lancashire you can take the HSE test at the beginning of course. Please ask for details and we will guide you through what you need to do.

The aim of this course is to provide candidates with practical and theoretical knowledge in order for them to undertake the role of a Compact Crane Operator.

  • Compact Crane Operator’s Manual
  • Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Downrating of Lifting Accessories
  • Duty charts
  • Crane terminology
  • Maintenance, inspection & pre-use checks
  • Loading & unloading procedures for machine transportation
  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability/ground conditions
  • Related Capacity Indicators (RCI’s) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
  • Manoeuvre Crane in confined spaces, on and off transport
  • Identifying weights & centre of gravity of loads
  • Compact Crane safety devices
  • Identifying overhead hazards
  • Spider crane set-up
  • Operating with and without loads
  • Theory assessment
  • Practical assessment

Successful candidates will be awarded a Red CPCS Trained Operator card endorsed with the category Compact Crane A66 A.
