Former Fijian rugby international and ex-Lance Corporal Alosio Yamoyamo has described his recent experience at Ainscough Training Services as “the best training I’ve ever had – second to none”.
The ex-serviceman and powerhouse centre, who served 10 years in the Queen’s Royal Lancers, completed A62 Slinger Signaller training at Ainscough Training Services’ Lancashire headquarters as part of his ongoing development in the UK’s civil engineering sector. The training, he says, was on par with the elite-level discipline he experienced during his time in the British Army and international sport.
Alosio said: “I’ve done lifting ops before, but nothing as thorough as this. From the classroom learning to the hands-on assessment, it was top class. Dave Patten, the trainer, was outstanding – and full credit has to go to him. Everything was made clear despite English being my second language. The whole team made me feel so welcome, and chatting to Tim, the MD, who’s also ex-army, really made it feel like home. I’ve already told my colleagues to get booked in.”
Now working with Waitlings Civil Engineering, Alosio’s path into construction followed a dynamic career spanning global rugby, international military service, and family life in the UK. He previously worked with Readypower Rail Services, and prefers staying ‘on the tools’ – despite recent offers to step into an office-based role. “I’ve always been someone who wants to be in the thick of it with the lads. That’s where the energy is, and it’s where I can lead best,” he added.
Alosio’s career is nothing short of extraordinary. After moving to the UK aged 19, he served with distinction in the armed forces – representing the British Army in the International Defence Rugby Cup, where he was highlighted as a ‘player to watch’ for topping speed and agility tests. As part of his military rugby journey, he also played in the Middlesex Sevens, and turned out for elite invitational side Samurai International RFC.
Outside the army, Alosio played professionally for:
Harlequins
New York’s 7s team in the World Club Sevens at Twickenham
Two standout seasons competing in the U.S.
He now coaches the Stafford First XV – and still brings his boots.”I’ve toured all over the world with rugby and served on real frontlines in Iraq, but now I’ve found my purpose in construction. I want to keep learning, lead well, and bring that same mindset to every site I step on.”
Tim Morgan, Ainscough Training Services Managing Director, said: “Alosio represents everything that’s great about the people who pass through our training centre – integrity, experience, and an eagerness to learn. As a fellow ex-serviceman, I was proud to see the impact our trainers made. His story reminds us that great training changes lives, not just careers. We are looking forward to welcoming Alosio back to Leyland soon.”
Alosio, who passed the course with flying colours, is now pushing for further upskilling through the Appointed Person and Lift Supervisor courses – and is already an active ambassador for the training provider among his peers.
From international rugby fields to military frontlines, and now to construction excellence – Alosio’s journey exemplifies the calibre of professionals who choose Ainscough Training Services for their career development.
