Step Three - renewing a blue card

Your CPCS Blue Competence Operator Card must be within 5 years of its expiry date to renew using this route. If the card has expired over 5 years please see 'Expired Blue Cards' at the bottom of the page.

The renewal process is split in to 3 steps, all steps must be completed before the new CPCS Blue card will be issued. (please note this is a brief overview to simplify the process.

1. Health, Safety and Environment Test

(sometimes referred to as a touchscreen test)

This must have been passed, in the relevant category within the 2 years before you renew the card otherwise you will need to retake the test.

Appointed Person Managers and Professionals (MAP)
Crane Supervisor Specialist Supervisors
Slinger/Signaller Operatives
Mobile Crane Operatives

2. CPCS Renewal Test


The CPCS renewal test and the Health and Safety test can be booked and taken at the same time

You are required to pass the CPCS Renewal Test within the last 2 years in the category or group of categories you want to renew. To check which

3. Proof of on-going Practical Experience


You will need to either :

Have proof of 300 logbook* hours pro rata over the 5 years signed off by a CPCS registered validator **

Complete an On site assessment (OSA)


This category now has 5 endorsements:

A: All Types All Duties B: All Types Static Duties C: Lorry Loader D: Excavator E: Forklift

Current cardholders holding Slinger/Signaller (A40) have only been tested against static duties meaning that upon renewing the blue card endorsement B: Static Duties can be awarded only. 

If you would like to have endorsement A: All Duties added to your card then you will need to take a limited number of questions in a conversion theory test. Please call us for more information. 

Crane Supervisor

You will need to either :

Complete the A62 CPCS Renewal and Competence Assessment Form 

Or the CPCS A62 Practical Technical Test

Appointed Person

You will need to either :

Complete the A61 CPCS Renewal and Competence Assessment Form  

Or the CPCS A61 Practical Technical Test


How to Apply for the Card

Blue cards can be renewed up to 6 months before their expiry date. To apply to renew the card you will need to complete the F1/3 CPCS Application Form

Guidance notes are printed on the reverse of the form but should have any difficulties in completing it please don't hesitate to contact us.

Expired Blue Cards

If your blue card is beyond 5 years of the expiry date, to renew, you will need to:

1. CITB Health, safety and environment test in the relevant category, please see above to choose the correct one.
2. Pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests for each category held. Please call us for more details.
3. Hold the relevant SVQ or NVQ (if not held then the red trained operator card will be issued). Please see the 'Courses' and 'NVQ' menus above to view our full list of categories that we offer.
